Chris DeJohn Goes Back-to-Back at the 116th Walter J. Travis Invitational
Chris DeJohn captured his second consecutive Travis Invitational championship on Sunday at Garden City Golf Club, defeating Pat Wilson 2&1 in the final to claim the 116th edition of one of amateur golf's most storied match play events. DeJohn reached the final by outlasting medalist Rob Couture in a 19-hole semifinal — ending Couture's impressive run after he'd beaten Joe Saladino 2&1 and Daniel Abbondandolo 2&1 on Saturday. Wilson advanced to the final after dispatching John Hunter in the other semifinal. Hunter had been one of the tournament's most consistent players, taking down Matt Parziale 3&2 and Joseph Deraney 2&1 on Saturday before Wilson ended his run.
Matthew Naumec won the Devereux Emmet Cup, beating Andrew Lane in Sunday's final after taking down Trip Kuehne 3&2 and Andrew Biggadike 3&2 on Saturday. Griffin McQuilling had dominated the top half with a 5&3 quarterfinal win over Garett Engel — who had stunned top seed Dan MacDonald 3&2 — but fell to Naumec in the semis. In the Eisenhower Cup senior flight, Dave Scialabba claimed the title over Doug Clapp in the final.
The three 8-player flights crowned their champions as well. TJ Shuart won the William H. Taft Cup over Oscar Maxfield in the final — both unseeded players who upset higher seeds all weekend. Connor Casey won the Robert T. Jones Cup over Brian Falk. Jack Downey captured the Charles B. Macdonald Cup over Steve White, who had needed extra holes to get past John Patterson in the semifinal.
