Bailey Wins U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship 5 and 4 Over Smith to Earn Masters Invite and Pebble Beach Exemption

Andrew Bailey of Cleveland dominates the 36-hole final at The Lido, winning every match all week by at least two holes to claim his first USGA title.

Andrew Bailey of Cleveland captured the 45th U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship with a dominant 5 and 4 victory over Nate Smith in Thursday's 36-hole final at The Lido, capping a flawless week at Sand Valley Resort. The No. 3 seed, a Cleveland State Hall of Famer and three-time Horizon League Player of the Year, won all six of his matches by at least two holes, the most consistent run through the bracket in recent championship memory. Bailey earns an exemption into the 2027 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, a likely invitation to the 2027 Masters, and custody of the Robert T. Jones Jr. Memorial Trophy. Live scoring and full tournament results can be found on the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship tournament hub here.

Bailey's path to the title reads like a clinic in match play composure: Malmierca 2 and 1, Schall 4 and 3, Eades 4 and 3, Brame 3 and 2, Vogt 4 and 2, and Smith 5 and 4 in the final. The two-time Ohio Amateur champion (2023-2024) never trailed late in any match and closed out the championship on the 32nd hole. It is Bailey's first USGA title and the crowning achievement of an amateur career that has included back-to-back state championships and a Round of 32 appearance at the 2025 U.S. Amateur.

Smith, the 45th seed from Tetonia, Idaho, made an extraordinary run to the final, eliminating three-time champion Stewart Hagestad 5 and 4, fourth seed Matthew Paradis 3 and 1, and Parker Edens 6 and 5 before falling to Bailey. The two-time Duke All-American and 2024 Idaho Amateur champion had not been taken past the 17th hole in any of his first four matches, but Bailey proved too steady in the 36-hole format, with Bailey in command for much of the day.

The championship featured one of the most upset-filled brackets in recent Mid-Am history, with medalist Bobby Massa, defending champion Brandon Holtz, second seed Zach Foushee, and Hagestad all falling before the quarterfinals. Christian Cavaliere's run from the 57th seed and Sand Valley caddie Matt Hutchins' charge on his home course were among the week's best storylines. midamgolfHQ congratulates Andrew Bailey on his U.S. Mid-Amateur title and will continue covering the mid-amateur season through the fall.
