Huddleston Cup Round 1 Recap: Vandolah Grabs One-Shot Lead at Maridoe

Zachary Vandolah fired a 4-under 68 to take the solo first-round lead at the Huddleston Cup, one shot clear of Zach Atkinson and defending champion Bobby Massa.

Kansas City's Zachary Vandolah fired a 4-under 68 Thursday to take the solo first-round lead at the Huddleston Cup, the premier mid-amateur invitational held at Steve Smyers-designed Maridoe Golf Club outside Dallas. Vandolah, a two-time U.S. Mid-Amateur competitor and reigning Kansas City Match Play champion, held a one-shot advantage over Zach Atkinson and defending champion Bobby Massa, who both posted 3-under 69s on a course that tested the 36-player field. Ryan Burgess sits alone in fourth at 1-under 71, while a logjam of eight players, including two-time U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Scott Harvey, Charlie Holland, and Johnny Spellerberg, are tied for fifth at even par.

Maridoe showed its teeth beyond the top of the leaderboard, with only four players breaking par on the day. Former U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Matt Parziale and TJ Shuart were among four players at 1-over 73, while the rest of the field battled to stay within striking distance heading into Friday's second round.
