June 2026

What we are steaming on this month:
Welcome to Volume 31!
May served as another reminder that the mid-amateur game has never been deeper, stronger, or more competitive. Across the country, some of the calendar's most prestigious championships delivered compelling storylines, standout performances, and a growing list of players building resumes that deserve national attention. At Kinloch Golf Club, Brett Patterson continued his remarkable start to 2026, capturing the Giles Invitational and adding a second major title to his growing resume. Meanwhile, the inaugural Jupiter Invitational made an immediate splash on the schedule, with Jon Weiss emerging victorious and helping establish the event as one to watch for years to come.
The momentum didn't stop there. At Garden City Golf Club, Chris DeJohn successfully defended his Walter J. Travis Invitational title, proving once again why he remains one of the game's most formidable match-play competitors. Then, to close out the month at Maridoe Golf Club, Bobby Massa followed suit by defending his Huddleston Cup championship in convincing fashion. Massa's victory adds another significant achievement to an already stellar season and further strengthens what is becoming a compelling Walker Cup conversation around who the mid-am pick will be. As we turn the page to June, the action only intensifies. Major championships, national qualifiers, and some of the summer's most anticipated events are just around the corner, and as always, we'll have you covered with a full preview below.
We also want to thank the brands that continue to support this newsletter including Holderness & Bourne with our “Worth the Detour” section! We also have a new partner this month with TourIQ Golf. The Giles Invitational
May 1-3, 2026
Champion: Brett Patterson

The Giles Invitational delivered another great finish at Kinloch, with Brett Patterson capturing the title by a single shot after a closing 1-under 71 to finish at 7-under for the week. Patterson came into the event ranked No. 20 in the AmateurGolfInfo Mid-Am rankings, and with wins now at both the Snedeker Memorial and the Giles already this season, he’s making a strong case as the hottest mid-amateur in the country right now. The leaderboard stayed packed all final round as Sam Beach fired the best round, a 5-under 67, to surge into a tie for second alongside Stephen Behr, who stayed in contention all weekend after a Saturday 67 of his own. Former U.S. Mid-Am champion Scott Harvey and 36-hole co-leader Matt Vogt finished tied for fourth at 4-under.

May 7-9, 2026
Champion: Jon Weiss

Jupiter Invitational wrapped up with exactly the kind of finish you hope for from a first-year event, as Jon Weiss outlasted Jay Kirchdorfer and Ryan Burgess in a three-man playoff at Jonathan’s Landing. Weiss closed with a 1-under 70 in regulation to get to 5-under for the week, matching Burgess and Kirchdorfer before ultimately ending things on the fourth playoff hole with an eagle. Burgess had controlled the championship through the opening two rounds and entered the final day with the lead, but a 2-over 72 opened the door for the field. Kirchdorfer took full advantage, firing a final-round 66, the low round of the day, to force his way into the playoff.
Behind the trio at the top, Joe Conzemius, Jordan Elsen, Joshua Rhodes, and Tommy Hurst all finished tied for fourth at 2-under 208. But the story of the week was really the finish itself, with a three-man playoff and an eagle under pressure giving the Jupiter Invitational an unforgettable debut. For a brand-new event, it immediately felt like a meaningful addition to the mid-am calendar, and the atmosphere at Jonathan’s Landing only added to that feeling. Weiss leaves with a huge early-season win and momentum heading deeper into the spring schedule, while the tournament itself leaves year one with the kind of ending that builds instant credibility.

May 15-17, 2026
Champion: Chris DeJohn

The Walter J. Travis Invitational once again belonged to Chris DeJohn, who successfully defended his title on Sunday at Garden City Golf Club with a 2&1 win over Pat Wilson in the championship match. DeJohn’s path back to the trophy was anything but easy, highlighted by a 19-hole semifinal victory over medalist Rob Couture. Couture had put together one of the strongest runs of the week, knocking off both Joe Saladino and Daniel Abbondandolo on Saturday before finally falling in extra holes. On the other side of the bracket, Wilson earned his spot in the final by defeating John Hunter, who had been one of the steadiest players all week after wins over Matt Parziale and Joseph Deraney.
Elsewhere around Garden City, Matthew Naumec captured the Devereux Emmet Cup with a win over Andrew Lane in the final after taking down both Trip Kuehne and Andrew Biggadike on Saturday. Griffin McQuilling had made plenty of noise in the bracket as well, including a dominant 5&3 win over Garett Engel, who earlier upset top seed Dan MacDonald. In the Eisenhower Cup senior division, Dave Scialabba defeated Doug Clapp to take the title. The three additional flights also crowned champions, with TJ Shuart winning the William H. Taft Cup, Connor Casey taking the Robert T. Jones Cup, and Jack Downey capturing the Charles B. Macdonald Cup after Steve White’s impressive run to the final.

Champion: Bobby Massa

Bobby Massa defended his title at The Huddleston Cup, finishing at 4-under 212 at Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton, Texas. After taking control of the championship during the second round, Massa never looked back, cruising to a six-shot victory over first-round leader Zachary Vandolah and former U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Matt Parziale, who shared runner-up honors at 2-over 218. The victory marks Massa's second consecutive Huddleston Cup title, matching the accomplishment of two-time U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Scott Harvey, who won the event in 2023 and 2024. More importantly, the win adds another significant line to what has become one of the strongest resumes in amateur golf over the last 18 months.
Behind Massa, Christopher Wheeler posted the round of the day with a 3-under 69 to climb into solo fourth at 4-over 220. Johnny Spellerberg continued his strong season with a fifth-place finish at 5-over 221, while Tyler Thomas and Kendrick Vinar shared sixth at 6-over 222. Harvey, the two-time defending champion entering the week, struggled to a final-round 76 and finished tied for 11th at 9-over. With another marquee victory now on his resume, Massa's summer campaign will be closely watched as the Walker Cup selection process enters its final stretch, with few amateurs in the country boasting a stronger combination of recent victories and proven success in high-pressure competition.

European Mid-Amateur Men’s Championship
June 4-6, 2026
Defending Champion: Christoph Kogl

The 2026 championship heads back to Quinta do Peru Golf & Country Club in Portugal following a memorable 2025 edition that saw Austria’s Christoph Kogl capture the title with a composed final-round performance. Kogl entered the final day with a five-shot lead after posting the only consecutive rounds in the 60s, but early pressure from Ireland’s Stuart Grehan quickly tightened the leaderboard.
After his lead was cut to a single shot, Kogl responded with poise, playing steady golf before birdies on the 10th, 12th, and 14th holes helped him secure a two-shot victory at five-under-par. The win made him the second consecutive Austrian to lift the trophy, while Estonia’s Mattias Varjun finished runner-up in a breakthrough performance that earned his country its first EGA individual medal.
Quinta do Peru Golf & Country Club will provide the stage for another elite international field for the 2026 championship as European’s top mid-amateurs take on one of Portugal’s premier courses.

Anderson Memorial Four-Ball
June 4-7, 2026
Defending Champion: Scott Strickland & Jimmy Chestnut

The 89th Anderson Memorial Four-Ball Invitational returns to historic Winged Foot Golf Club in 2026, where another elite field of mid-amateurs will battle across one of golf’s most storied venues in pursuit of one of the game’s most prestigious titles.
A year ago, the championship delivered yet another memorable finish as Oakland Hills Country Club’s Jim Chestnut and Scott Strickland defended their title in dramatic fashion. The veteran duo survived a weather-shortened championship and ultimately edged Christian Cavaliere and Matt Minerva of Hudson National Golf Club in a playoff to capture their second consecutive Anderson Memorial crown.
Mother Nature forced an unusual format change in 2025, replacing the traditional match play bracket with a one-round shootout among the final four teams. But despite the altered path to the trophy, Chestnut and Strickland once again proved why they have become the team to beat at Winged Foot. Their poise, experience, and chemistry under pressure continued a dominant run that has turned them into modern fixtures of the championship.
Every year, the Anderson Memorial attracts an exceptional field featuring top mid-amateurs from some of the nation’s most prominent clubs, and 2026 promises another deep and competitive lineup. Familiar contenders, rising challengers, and seasoned veterans will all arrive with hopes of preventing Chestnut and Strickland from securing a remarkable third straight title.

C.B Macdonald Invitational Tournament
June 12-14, 2026
Defending Champion: Stewart Hagestad

The 2026 C.B. Macdonald Invitational returns to the iconic National Golf Links of America with another stacked field of elite mid-amateur talent set to compete for one of amateur golf’s most historic titles. All eyes will be on defending champion Stew Hagestad, who captured the 2025 title in dominant fashion and returns looking to add another trophy to his already impressive amateur résumé. Hagestad stormed through last year’s bracket with victories over TJ Shuart, Ryan Abbate, Sam Lape, and Andy Schonbaum, ultimately closing out the championship match 5&4.
The events format is similar to that of the Walter Travis where players complete a ojne round stroke play qualifier that then flights them into match play. This match play pressure and the timeless setting at National Golf Links creates one of the premier weeks on the amateur calendar. With eight flights and a deep field once again expected, the 2026 edition promises another memorable tournament.

George C Thomas Invitational
June 25-27, 2026
Defending Champion: Drew Kittleson

The 2026 George C. Thomas Invitational returns to the legendary North Course at Los Angeles Country Club, where one year ago Drew Kittleson delivered a performance for the ages. His commanding 10-shot victory in 2025 was powered by rounds of 68-69-66, setting a tournament-record 203 total. Drew turned one of amateur golf’s sternest tests into his personal showcase.
Now, the spotlight shifts to a new field eager to take on George C. Thomas Jr.’s strategic masterpiece. With its firm, fast greens, daring angles, and relentless demand for precision, LACC’s North Course remains one of the most respected championship venues in the game. Host site of the 2017 Walker Cup and the 2023 U.S. Open, the course once again promises to reward bold shot-making and punish even the smallest mistakes.
Kittleson’s unforgettable final-round 66, highlighted by a blistering front-nine 31, set a towering standard for this championship. Remarkably, he was the only player to finish under par, a reminder of just how demanding the North Course can be. As the 2026 edition begins, the question is simple: who will rise to meet the challenge and add their name to the growing legacy?

Worth the Detour

Those who have been following our adventures have likely noticed a few new events popping up across the Lowcountry, including the debut of the Tabby Invitational. That stretch of golf country from coastal Georgia into South Carolina continues to quietly build one of the strongest collections of modern minimalist golf in America. Just a couple hours up the road from Frederica Golf Club sits one of the true hidden gems of the region: Chechessee Creek Club.
Designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, Chechessee Creek is everything you hope a Lowcountry golf experience would be. The course moves effortlessly across the property with holes that feel discovered rather than manufactured. There is no excess here with just natural movement, firm playing surfaces, beautiful scale, and the type of understated architecture that reveals more character with every round. It is a course that encourages walking, thinking, and appreciating the land rather than overpowering it.
What perhaps stands out even more than the golf itself is the atmosphere surrounding a visit. Chechessee Creek has a warmth and hospitality that immediately makes you feel like a regular, even on your first trip. The golf shop perfectly reflects the club’s personality — functional, quaint, and completely unpretentious. In an era where many clubs chase grandeur, Chechessee Creek reminds you how special simplicity and authenticity can still be. Of course make sure to load up on H&B gear while you’re on property!
Finally for the real “ball knowers” get yourself a Creek Tea and thank us later.
