Round 1 Recap: Matt Vogt's 7-Under 65 Stuns Kinloch as Patterson Stalks at -6

Matt Vogt, flagged as a dark horse in our preview, opens with a 7-under 65 to take a one-shot lead through 18 holes. Brett Patterson sits a stroke back at -6, while several top-ranked names dug themselves an early hole at Kinloch.

Matt Vogt stole the show on Friday at the 2nd Annual Giles Invitational, opening with a 7-under-par 65 to take a one-shot lead through the first round at Kinloch. Vogt, the mid-amateur we flagged as a dark horse in our preview, posted that number on a course rated 75 with a 138 slope from the back tees, and it was the kind of round that resets the entire conversation. One shot back at 6-under 66 is Brett Patterson, who entered the week ranked No. 20 in the AmateurGolfInfo Mid-Am rankings. Three off the lead is former U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Scott Harvey at 69. Matthew Lowe (No. 22 Mid-Am) and Dan Walters share fourth at 2-under 70, while Brad Nurski (No. 39), Logan Harrell, and Blanton Farmer (No. 87) round out the under-par scores at 1-under 71.

The day was kinder to some of our preview names than others. Christian Cavaliere, our pick to win, sits at even-par 72 in a tie for ninth and well within striking distance, alongside Hayes Brown, Connor Doyal, Will Davenport, and the veteran Trip Kuehne. The afternoon was less forgiving at the top of the rankings. Evan Beck (No. 6) opened with a 73 to sit T16, and Nate Smith (No. 7) carded a 78 to drop to T51, leaving him 13 shots off Vogt's pace and needing something special over the final 36 holes. With Vogt holding a one-shot lead, Patterson within range, and a deep band of contenders at even or +1, this leaderboard has the makings of a real fight on Saturday and Sunday.
