November 2025

What we are steaming on this month:

October delivered on every bit of its promise with a month packed with elite golf, dramatic finishes, and a few names etching themselves into mid-am history. Ina Kim-Schaad stole the spotlight at the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur, winning in extra holes at Monterey Peninsula Country Club in one of the most thrilling finals the event has ever seen. Parker Sisk added his name to a prestigious list of champions at the Stocker Cup while standout performances at the Berkeley Cup and J.R. Williams continued to showcase just how deep the mid-am field has become.

From the California coast to classic inland venues, October reminded us why this stretch of the calendar is so special. Crisp conditions, strong fields, and championship golf at its purest. As the fall season winds down, the energy isn’t slowing. November brings the home stretch of 2025 with the NIT and Ewing Cup. We’ve got full recaps, storylines, and player highlights from a loaded October slate below.

The topic of reinstated amateurs continues to remain top of mind. We will have more content and conversations coming in the winter months as the tournaments slow down but this topic heats up. So stay tuned!

Champion: Ina Kim-Schaad

Congrats to friend of the newsletter Ina Kim-Schaad who came out on top at the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur held at Monterey Peninsula Country Club’s Dunes Course in Pebble Beach, CA. Ina became the first two-time winner since 2016. The championship match ended when she drained an 18-foot birdie putt on the 23rd hole, finishing what was the longest championship final in the tournament’s history.

From the outset, the match between Kim-Schaad and Hanley Long lived up to its billing tightly contested, with each player trading blows in a seesaw battle. Kim-Schaad took the early lead, Long answered, and neither gave much ground. On the back nine, the lead flipped several times before both bogeyed the 18th to force extra holes. After an 18-hole marathon, Kim-Schaad finally prevailed on the 23rd hole to secure the victory.

Beyond the final itself, the week marked several noteworthy milestones. The field included the most entries ever for this championship and featured the youngest average age in its history. Kim-Schaad’s victory also came in her 20th USGA championship, highlighting her longevity and consistency in the amateur ranks. By winning again, she earned exemptions into future championships, including the U.S. Women’s Amateur and the U.S. Women’s Open.

For anyone following women’s amateur golf, this week delivered a story of resilience, match-play endurance, and strategic patience. Kim-Schaad said she “expected a war of attrition” and approached the match accordingly playing defensively and staying mentally strong deep into extra holes. The championship was a reminder that in high-stakes golf, experience and composure can make all the difference. It was a memorable week and sets the tone for what to expect at next year’s event.

The John R. Williams Four-Ball Invitational

October 2-4, 2025

Oak Hill Country Club (East Course)

Champions: Matt Parziale & Nick Maccario

Friends of the newsletter Matt Parziale and Nick Maccario successfully defended their title at the John R. Williams Four-Ball Invitational at Oak Hill Country Club, finishing strong in ideal 82-degree conditions. Unlike last year’s wire-to-wire victory, the Massachusetts-Georgia duo faced a tight battle, tied for first after round one and trailing by a single shot after round two to the Texas team of Tyler Thomas and Brad Gibson. Thomas and Gibson bogeyed the 18th hole, leaving Parziale and Maccario to seize the win. The champions closed their back nine with a birdie on #12 and six consecutive pars to secure the victory once again at one of amateur golf’s most prestigious four-ball events.

Parziale, a 2020 Massachusetts Amateur medalist and 2021 runner-up, and Maccario, a past U.S. Mid-Amateur semifinalist, continue to establish themselves as one of the premier Mid-Am teams in the country. Notably, Simon McInnis recorded a hole-in-one on #5 to help his team finish eighth, highlighting the level of talent in the field.

Dating back more than fifty years, the John R. Williams Four-Ball Invitational remains a marquee team event in amateur golf. Played over Oak Hill’s storied East Course from championship tees, the tournament honors Dr. John R. Williams, a longtime member who famously planted many of the club’s signature trees. Past champions include prominent names in amateur and professional golf, underscoring the enduring prestige of this iconic event.

Birmingham National Invitational Tournament (NIT)

October 31-November 2nd

Defending Champion: Hunter Hamrick

Courtesy of the NIT

By the time you are reading this the NIT will already be underway! Looking back at last year Hunter Hamrick delivered a remarkable comeback to win the Birmingham National Invitational Tournament (NIT) at the Country Club of Birmingham’s West Course. Starting the final round five shots behind 36-hole leader Sean Rowan, Hamrick capitalized on Rowan’s early struggles and surged with four birdies on the back nine to clinch the title. His closing 67, highlighted by birdies on holes 12, 13, 15, and 16, sealed a 6-under total (71-69-67) and a three-shot victory. The Pike Road, Alabama native credited steady putting and strong iron play for his success, calling the back-nine stretch some of his best golf of the week. It was a significant leap from his T11 finish in his previous NIT appearance.

The Country Club of Birmingham’s West Course will be once again challenge players with its classic layout demanding both precision and patience. Rising amateurs and seasoned veterans alike will look to replicate Hamrick’s mix of composure and aggressive play down the stretch an approach that defined last year’s championship and set a high bar for this year’s contenders. And for those in the know Otey’s will provide the perfect post round drink venue to celebrate all the good (and bad) shots!

Ewing Cup Four-Ball

November 14-16 2025

Defending Champions: Travis & Jordan Woolf

Courtesy of the Ewing Cup

Last year, the team of Travis Woolf and Jordan Woolf (brothers) rose to the top of the field in the four-ball format, combining steady play and timely birdies to secure the win. Their teamwork was evident as they navigated the better-ball setting, with one partner producing when the other lagged, and vice versa especially down the stretch when the pressure ramped up. Travis name will of course look familiar as he was one of a handful of mid-ams to advance to the U.S Amateur match play this summer at The Olympic Club.

Looking ahead to this year’s edition, the historic backdrop of the Dallas Athletic Club adds an extra layer of prestige to the contest. Founded in 1919, the club has evolved into one of Dallas’s distinguished private venues with a deep tradition in golf, including hosting national-level amateur championships and benefitting from design updates. Given that legacy, this year’s four-ball format will be contested on a course that rewards precision, smart strategy, and strong partner synergy.

The Ice Bath

We are back for another edition of the Ice Bath. While this newsletter focuses on the “majors” of mid-am golf there is another set of tournaments that deserves a mention here. Let’s highlight a few of the best smaller mid-am events that blend top-tier competition with rich club tradition.

The Creek’s Joe Dey Invitational stands out as a pure test of golf and camaraderie, honoring the legendary USGA figure with a field packed with experienced mid-ams navigating one of Long Island’s finest layouts. The Van Gerbig at Meadow Brook Club offers a similarly elite experience……..invitation-only, fiercely contested, and played on a course steeped in classic design and history. And then there’s the Scioto Swat at Scioto Country Club in Columbus, a fall fixture where strategy and precision are rewarded.

Each event may fly under the national radar, but together they define what makes the mid-am circuit so special: great venues, deep fields, and a competitive edge that never fade. If you get the chance to find an invite into one of these special events make sure and take advantage.
